I'm no Jim!

Calling All Jims: Visit Red Robin for Your FREE Jim Beam(R) Burger On "Jim Day," Dec. 6
GREENWOOD VILLAGE, Colo., Dec 05, 2011 (BUSINESS WIRE) --
Of all the surnames in the U.S. today, "Jim" is by far the most abundant, with more than 5 million people sharing Jim, James, Jimmy or some variation of the moniker. On Tuesday, Dec. 6, all the Jims of America will have more in common than their name when they're eligible for a free Sweet Jim Beam(R) Bacon Swiss Burger at participating Red Robin(R) restaurants nationwide on that day.
Red Robin teamed up with one of the most well-known Jims, Jim Beam(R) - the best-selling brand of bourbon in the world - to create this mouth-watering burger complete with a bourbon-glazed beef patty, applewood smoked bacon, caramelized bourbon onions and melted Swiss cheese on a garlic-butter toasted brioche bun. To celebrate this limited-time burger, Red Robin designated tomorrow as "Jim Day" and any guests who verify their "Jim" status with a photo I.D. on Tuesday, Dec. 6, will have the opportunity to indulge in the Sweet Jim Beam(R) Bacon Swiss Burger's perfect combination of sweet and savory flavors for free.*
"We're betting there are lots of 'Jims' out there who would enjoy a burger with bourbon and bacon so we're giving them the chance to try one on us," said Denny Post, Red Robin's senior vice president and chief marketing officer. "And if your name isn't 'Jim,' invite one of the millions of 'Jims' in the U.S. to visit Red Robin with you on December 6, and make sure they offer you a bite of their Jim Beam burger, of course."
The Sweet Jim Beam(R) Bacon Swiss Burger, along with a perennial holiday favorite, the Gingerbread Shake, which is blended with graham cracker crumbs and topped with a gingersnap cookie, is only available for a limited time through December 24. For an adult version of the shake, guests 21 years of age or older can add a shot of Jim Beam to the Gingerbread Shake.

Chris Christie goes after our water and air

Below is an email from Barbara Buono, the New Jersey Senate Majority Leader, who created a petition at SignOn.org that is getting a lot of attention and may be of interest to people in your area.
Dear New Jersey MoveOn member,
Governor Chris Christie has proposed a sweeping attack on the laws that protect New Jersey's air, land, and water.

Gov. Christie's proposed new Department of Environmental Protection "waiver rule" would allow companies to circumvent over 100 important environmental guidelines. To stop this attack on our environment, we must act now.

Last week, I introduced a resolution holding these proposed rules inconsistent with the law's intent. Simply put, if the Legislature passes my measure, Governor Christie's waiver rule will be on its way to defeat.

But to convince my fellow legislators to vote to stop Governor Christie's attack on the environment, I need New Jerseyans to speak out. That's why I created a petition on SignOn.org, which says:
Say no to Chris Christie's plan to let big polluters ruin our water, air and land. Say yes to a clean environment.
Will you sign the petition? Click here to add your name, and then pass it along to your friends:

Sincerely,

Barbara Buono, New Jersey Senate Majority Leader

The Official R.Crumb Site has just posted the second part of an exclusive interview with Robert Crumb, voicing his opinions on a list of celebrities posed by Wildwood Serigraphs' Alex Wood. Alex explains, "Over the years, talking with Robert about many different things, I've been surprised by some of the things he likes and dislikes. We all know he loves old music from the early part of the last century, and doesn't like rock music. But then he says he likes Tommy James and the Shondells, and Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs? So in a continuing discussion in September, 2011, I asked his opinion on a list of people in the news past and present."

SMILE NOW
On November 1, Capitol Records will release The Beach Boys' 1967 lost masterwork as The SMiLE Sessions in three editions: a 5CD/2LP/2x7-inch single boxset, a 2CD version and a 2LP set. Each edition of The SMiLE Sessions is built around an assembled set of core session tracks, the running order of which has been modeled after Brian Wilson Presents SMiLE from 2004. The boxset adds early song drafts, alternate takes, instrumentals and vocal-only mixes, plus studio chatter. Artist Frank Holmes' original graphic design has been preserved for all configurations, and the boxset's 3-D shadow box lid finally invites listeners into The SMiLE Shop, only 44 years after its promised grand opening.

The boxset (measuring 13" x 13" x 2.5") boasts a staggering and immersive array of material, and some rarities that even the most diehard fans never expected to see official release, such as the Jasper Daily/Brian Wilson collaboration "Teeter Totter Love" and "additional material" like "Three Blind Mice" and the June and October 1967 takes of "Cool, Cool Water".

Only the boxset will have a 60-page case-bound book with liner notes by Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine, Bruce Johnston, Frank Holmes, Peter Reum, Tom Nolan, Dominic Priore, plus anecdotes by Marilyn Wilson-Rutherford and Diane Rovell (The Honeys), Dean Torrence (Jan and Dean), Mark Volman (The Turtles), Michael Vosse, David Anderle, and Danny Hutton (Three Dog Night), plus: Timeline, Sessionography, Lyrics, Frank Holmes' drawings, Producer's Notes and over 60 previously unreleased photographs.

Collectors should take note that the 2LP set (either with the boxset or buy separately) will include "stereo mixes and session highlights (not available on CDs)" and 12" x 12" booklet created for original release with photos by Guy Webster and drawings by Frank Holmes.

The 2CD SMiLE Sessions will also be specially packaged. It, too, will be an attractive package in a lift-top box with the original Holmes artwork and measuring 5.5" x 5.5" x 1". It contains two CD wallets, a 1" SMiLE button, a smaller (14.5" x 20") poster of the art, plus an abridged 36-page booklet with notes by Brian Wilson and others. - theseconddisc.com

Here's the trick:
when your car is hot from being in the sun you can cool it down by rolling down one window and then,

It pumps cooler air in from outside the car like a big set of bellows.
You won't believe how fast it cools the car down.
(of course you need to have cooler air outside your car to pump in - not a given).

Fwd: Larry "Wild Man" Fischer, 1944-2011

---------- Forwarded message ----------

Friends...

We're very saddened to report that rock and roll lost another legend yesterday. Larry 'Wild Man' Fischer  passed away yesterday morning at UCLA hospital from heart related complications. Larry lived a tough, hard 66 years of life.

Even though Larry never did reach the pinnacle of fame and fortune he so yearned for, he was successful in inspiring and influencing people from all over the world with his unique brand of music and expression.

Thank you Larry for your friendship, generosity and your music.  You were a one-of-a-kind talent with a 'one-of-a-kind mind.' There will NEVER be another one like you. We miss you already.

Earth must prepare for close encounter with aliens, say scientists

UN should co-ordinate plans for dealing with extraterrestrials and we can't guarantee that aliens will be friendly

Alok Jha, science correspondent
Tuesday January 11 2011
guardian.co.uk

http://www.guardian.co.uk/science/2011/jan/10/earth-close-encounter-aliens-extraterrestrials

World governments should prepare a co-ordinated action plan in case Earth is contacted by aliens, according to scientists.

They argue that a branch of the UN must be given responsibility for "supra-Earth affairs" and formulate a plan for how to deal with extraterrestrials, should they appear.

The comments are part of an extraterrestrial-themed edition of the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society A [http://rsta.royalsocietypublishing.org/content/current/" title="] published today. In it, scientists examine all aspects of the search for extraterrestrial life, from astronomy and biology to the political and religious fallout that would result from alien contact.

"Will a suitable process based on expert advice from proper and responsible scientists arise at all, or will interests of power and opportunism more probably set the scene?" asked Professor John Zarnecki of the Open University and Dr Martin Dominik of the University of St Andrews in the introductory paper [http://rsta.royalsocietypublishing.org/lookup/doi/10.1098/rsta.2010.0236" title="]. "A lack of co-ordination can be avoided by creating an overarching framework in a truly global effort governed by an international politically legitimated body." The pair argue that the UN has a ready-made mechanism for such a forum in its Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (Copuos) [http://www.oosa.unvienna.org/oosa/COPUOS/copuos.html" title="].

Member states of Copuos should put "supra-Earth affairs" on their agenda, say the scientists, and establish structures similar to those proposed for dealing with threats from near-Earth objects, such as asteroids, that might be on a collision course with our planet.

According to Simon Conway Morris, a professor of evolutionary palaeobiology at Cambridge University, anyone planning for alien contact should prepare for the worst [http://rsta.royalsocietypublishing.org/lookup/doi/10.1098/rsta.2010.0276" title="].

Evolution on alien worlds, he said, is likely to be Darwinian in nature. Morris argues that life anywhere else in the universe will therefore probably have important similarities with life on Earth ? especially if it comes from Earth-like worlds that have similar biological molecules to ours. That means ET might resemble us, warts and all, with our tendencies towards violence and exploitation.

"Why should we 'prepare for the worst'? First, if intelligent aliens exist, they will look just like us, and given our far from glorious history, this should give us pause for thought," wrote Morris in the journal's special issue.

Ted Peters, a professor of systematic theology at the Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary in California, considered what might happen to the world's religions in the event of ET making contact. Conventional wisdom suggests that terrestrial religion would collapse if the existence of extraterrestrial intelligence (ETI) were confirmed, he wrote [http://rsta.royalsocietypublishing.org/lookup/doi/10.1098/rsta.2010.0234" title="].

"Because our religious traditions formulated their key beliefs within an ancient world view now out of date, would shocking new knowledge dislodge our pre-modern dogmas? Are religious believers Earth-centric, so that contact with ET would de-centre and marginalise our sense of self-importance? Do our traditional religions rank us human beings on top of life's hierarchy, so if we meet ETI who are smarter than us will we lose our superior rank? If we are created in God's image, as the biblical traditions teach, will we have to share that divine image with our new neighbours?"

His conclusion, however, is that faith in Earth's major religions would survive intact. "Theologians will not find themselves out of a job. In fact, theologians might relish the new challenges to reformulate classical religious commitments in light of the new and wider vision of God's creation."

"Traditional theologians must then become astrotheologians ... What I forecast is this: contact with extraterrestrial intelligence will expand the existing religious vision that all of creation ? including the 13.7bn-year history of the universe replete with all of God's creatures ? is the gift of a loving and gracious God," he speculated.
